Fermentation/Lagering Chamber in KC

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

I’ve been fighting fermentation temps since I restarted brewing last December, my basement is just a little to warm. I’ve used an enclosure using a Peltier you may have seen - pretty ghetto but it works - barely.

Anyway, the free freezer finally showed up. And I found a place to store the HLT and Mashtun.

It has the coils in the shelves - so I can’t get a conical or carboy in it. Besides that it’s full of hops - and I can make Ice next summer for cooling.

Next was cleaing an area to vent cold air from the freezer. Yesterday I cut out the shelf that used to extend all the way to the left wall, turned it 90 degrees and closed off an area that is about 5.5′ x 5.5′ x2″

Today I put in the pink foam insulation and closed it over with 1/8″ wood. Still have to do the back wall - did the hard ones today.

.

Next will be finishing the back, insulated doors. Then run flexible ductwork from the freezer into the chamber.

I plan to divide the chamber - have two controllers. The side closest to the freezer will be the coldest (lagering chamber and/or lager fermentation chamber and the other will be for ale fermentations and/or general storage. One fan will pull air from the freezer into the first chamber and return to the freezer. Then another will pull from the first chamber and return to the first. Both running on separate controllers

I think it will work and certainly would appreciate any suggestions.

Cheers,

DJ
