After the Schneider and Brooklyner Hopfen-Weisse press release we posted a little while ago, I decided to go to my favorite local liquor store and pick up a couple bottles.
Before I get into any tasting notes, here is some background information about Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen-Weisse and the conditions in which I tried it:

As we close in on harvest season for hops, I thought I would start a thread to help us Lupulus Neophytes.
Just like my first couple batches of beer, I worry, fuss and hover over my hops. “Is it time to pick them yet?” “Are they turning brown now?” “What does ‘papery dry’ mean? Are my hops ‘papery’?”
I assume others are going through the same. Hopefully this thread becomes a clearing house of information and pictures.
I have a copy of David Beach’s book, “Homegrown Hops”
Here is what my Mt Hoods look like tonight.
Slightly brown and the little brown strings starting come off the ends. They are more dry and springy when squeezed than a couple weeks ago. But are they dry and springy enough to pick? (the neurosis starts to set in)
Here is one split open per David Beach. The Lupuline (sp?) yellow dust is darker than a week ago or so.
But is the yellow dark enough? Should I pick them now?
So - anybody got some hints to share with the rest of us about wehn to pick and how to dry?
I got a decent food dehydrator off craigslist.org. So I am set with that.
If you have an alternative to drying hops, please share.

We’re up for hosting, especially while it’s going to be nice outside for a while yet. Mid to late August is a little up in the air at our place (still doable though), but something early Sept works too.
csbosox - no I won’t carpool if it’s at our place

I would like to serve a Hefe from my kegarator at higher carbonation levels without adding a longer beverage hose. I remember reading something about the Flo-Gate restrictor from Vent-Matic (I have Vent-Matic taps). Their website seems to be down (www.ventmatic.com) so I’m assuming their email may be down too.
Anyone know if they are still around or where I can find the Flo-Gate product?

It’s the season for saison. Ha! After the great saison last week we decided to dive into the style head first with several American saisons. These run the gamut, both in flavor, and in alcohol - one is 4.5% while another is over 9% ABV.

One of the coolest things about sharing information online is finding others who share the same interests as you do.
Over the past year of blogging at CFWAY, we’ve had the luxury of being mentioned in beer related blogs and linked to from other sites about the brewing industry. We thought we would take a […]
