Hi all
I’ve had a search, but can’t find anyone here who has had a similar problem to me…

When I add sugar to each bottle to individually prime them, the bottle immediately foams over!
It’s too quick for me to get the lid on!

I know it sounds silly, but I just can’t get it to work.
The beer has fermented for at least 2 1/2 weeks, and gives stable hydrometer readings, so i’m fairly sure it’s finished fermenting and is ready to bottle.

I was told that it is a reaction with the CO2, that causes the foam-over, but I don’t know how to stop it!
I tried adding the sugar to each bottle first, but then the whole bottle foams when you fill it.

I’m not too keen to try bulk priming yet.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a new brewer?
Thanks for your help!

my first AG all by myself

Monday, May 26th, 2008

OK. so this is technically my second AG. The first one I had the help of my best bud, and brewing mentor rickkickin. So this was my first AG as a loner. All in all a preetttty good brew day. I think I have finally tuned my mill in just right. so that is a plus. So where too begin. I guess at the mash. I had 13 lbs of grain. 12 lbs muntons. .75 lbs munich and .25 lbs crystal 40L. I put 15.5 liters of water in my kettle and heated it up to about 165. Dumped her in the mash tun. stirred and it was around 150-151. I let it go though because my OG is expected high, and I want it to dry out well. hour later stirred, and added 5 more quarts for absorbtion, and drained it out. then added 10 more quarts at 201 for sparging. I have no idea where i miscalculated but this left me with only 5 gallons. so I threw 10 more quarts in at around 168. Got her at about 6.25 gallons and good to go. now with my boil i cook it slowly.. it took me almost an hour to get it boiling.. towards the end I got more liberal and cranked it up, and almost had a boil-over but I flamed out before it could happen, relit and calmed down a bit. did a 60 min boil threw in my hops. (half an oz of magnum at 60. an oz of cascade at 30. an oz of cascade at 10. half an oz of cascade at 2.) I was getting insane hotbreak. all kinds or little protien floaties. loved it. so then at flameout I for the first time used the wort chiller in the garden hose and WOW! had it down from boiling to 130 in 5 minutes flat. had it to 90 in 15 minutes. then I got impatient and opened the ball lock valve to soon. as many of you may know, the blichmann boilmakers have like a filter on the valve. it got clogged with coagulation particles. and I got a lot of it in my fermentor :-( . at about 3 gallons it was draining so slow I had to siphon it out. the siphon went well I got some hot break at the very end of course, but other than that it was CLEAR! OG ended up about 1064 which is what my goal was. I just hope my mom hydrated the packet of yeast properly. she wanted to help so I let her to that figuring its hard to mess up. but I didnt have any clumps if yeast.. it was like pure liquid when i dumped it.. yeasty colored liquid…but liquid.. maybe it was just a low concentration. so im trying to decide if i should use a blow off tube or not. and also trying to decide if i should secondary with all the coagulation I picked up. im thinking it shouldn’t be neccasary still to secondary. lastly I think i need to be less conservative and crank that propane burner up and get that boil started. this brew day was a 8-9 hour day. im sure it will shorten as I get into the rhythm of things. well thats my brewblog all. hope you enjoyed. PLEASE LEAVE ANY OPINIONS OR COMMENTS. (just don’t knock my storytelling skills I know they suck ;-)

Sanyo 4912 Discontinued. Now What?

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

None of the Best Buy stores around here carry this anymore and to get it shipped cost about $100.00 more. I don’t know if I should bite the bullet and pay for shipping or look into alternatives. I have everything I need except for the fridge.

Anyone know of a reasonable alternative to the 4912?

Hi, I’m Jim, and I am not a hophead. I have tried to be, but it’s just not my style. My friend and I go back and forth on this subject of hopiness. He loves the bitterness of hops. I just picked him up a Founders Devil Dancer Triple IPA, 13% ABV and like 120 IBUs. He cannot wait to try it and I cannot wait for him to take it from my fridge so I can put something else in its place. Even a brew I just had with about 60-70 IBUs, again, too hoppy for me. I’ve figured that my max IBUs for beer that I will enjoy are around 40 and below. I do like some hop flavor, but I like a mild balanced brew and if it’s a little on the sweet side, that’s fine with me.
So, I am calling out to the hopheads and non-hopheads and asking for your ideas and suggestions on 5 gallon extract recipes or beer styles that would fit the tastes of non-hopheads. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Cleaning silicone lines

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I have the 1/2″ silicone tubing http://morebeer.com/view_product/17608/102347 that I run lines between the MT and herms, herms to MT, kettle to pump, pump to chiller. When I am done I rinse them out, but I think they are ready for a good swabbing. What is the best thing? I was thinking about boiling a kettle of PBW, and recircing for awhile then send some clean hot water through, is this enough?

Beerstone gone

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I used this today on a conical that had some serious beerstone. An overnight soak with PBW didn’t cut it. I sprayed this on 3 times and wiped it out with a green scrubby. Pretty easy cleanup

Can’t get fermentation started!

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I brewed the BYO Hop Rod Rye Recipe.
I aerated by sloshing the wort pretty good with the immersion cooler copper coil and also sloshed around in the bucket a bit before pitching a vial of the White Labs California Ale yeast. after 3 days nothing, so I pitched another vial of the same.
5 days later still nothing. I am concerned.
I am fermenting in a temperature controlled refrigerator using a Johnson Controls
A419 controller set for 68 degrees. The fermometer strips on the side of the bucket confirm correct temerature.

Do I aerate and pitch another? would aerating at this point cause weird off flavors?
I really think I can save this, but I need some helpful advice.
Do I keep pitching yeast? that gets expensive in a hurry.
I have another bucket of a different recipe fermenting right beside it that is working fine using the same yeast. Can I borrow some from that bucket using it like a starter?
Do I need to do something to the uncooperative wort first?

Just about to fire up the burner

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Just about to get the burner going for the mash water here in just about an hour or so. I will be doing a British Mild, my first one actually, so I am pretty excited about getting it going. Anyone else about to brew today?? Actually will be brewing outside for the first time in a very long time. Since I have the indoor system I almost never come outside much, but I have a few other brewers visiting today, so outside in the beautiful weather it is!!

Back on the Wagon

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

cool.gif
Some of you may remember me from a couple of years ago here on the board and I must say I fell off the wagon pretty hard. I haven’t even looked at my brew equipment until a couple of weeks ago when a friend saw it in my garage and my kegerator with “stuff” stacked up on it. Last weekend I broke some of it out and cleaned it up and refurbished the kegerator and kegs.

I started out with a simple Barvarian Wheat using WYeast 3056 in a partial mash recipe. I wanted to keep it to the minimum to get back into the swing of it. You’d be surprised what details you remember when you get back into something you used to do almost every weekend. Mash temps, idophore and irish moss amounts, when and why to do something, etc. It took about 4 hours from start to finish and I pitched late that evening.

The next morning the carboy was getting with it and I felt that old feeling come back. It’s that feeling of creation. Something I created had taken on a life of it’s own. AND, it was going to end up as BEER!! hehe.gif

I’ve been good about not falling back on the “Big Three” beers too much over the last few years. Micro breweries have really stepped up in meeting the demand of refined beer drinkers like us. Not to name any, of course. But, there’s always been a phrase that keeps playing again and again in my head that I think had a little to do with bringing me back. I can’t recall who posted it years ago and I won’t take any credit for it.

Every sip of homebrew is like a kiss from an Angel.”

And I fall in love again…… blush.gif

I browsed the plumbing sections of two stores and need some help on selecting the right parts for the job. I was planing on using some stainless braided hose and not slotted tubing but will try what works best.

Exactly what parts did you use to get a leak resistant connection through the hole left by removing the spigot on this thing?

Off flavour? wine taste

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Storage Issues

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I am basically running out of room in my house. I have most of my little equipment & odds and ends in our shower stall that we never really used, and my grains in ten and eighteen gallon containers in our laundry room (which is small as it is) along with six 5 gallon cornies, and to top it off, the friggin cat litter box. I’d like to get the grain in a better location since I don’t really want to kill my wifes’ cat, but my options are basically only outside.

Does anyone store their grains in air tight containers outside, like in a shed or one of those plastic storage containers?

I figure the main concern would be with high temps, then possibly cool nights, which then brings on the possibility of condensation and whatnot.

Thoughts? TIA
