What makes someone a notable drunk in our eyes? Well, if you’re Zane Lamprey, it’s because you get paid to fly to exotic locales, meet new interesting people from different cultures, and ultimately get drunk with those people. Zane, the host of Three Sheets (which up until Dec 2008 has been aired on the MojoHD channel), was gracious enough to grant us an interview while we were at the Great American Beer Fest. He was every bit as nice as you’d imagine from watching him on the television, but we caught him early, so he wasn’t drunk yet. But Zane’s reputation precedes him. Thanks, Zane!
700 eager Flying Dog fans Brewery showed up to our inaugural FBAG (short for Flying Dog, Brats & Gonzo) on the afternoon of Friday, October 10, 2008. We had several self-serve beer stations pouring our Canis Major series brews, brats on the grill, as well as our newest Wild Dog release, Dog Schwarz.
Dog Schwarz is a smoked double lager, and Matt Brophy (our VP of Brewing Operations) lets you know what it’s all about.
GABF - The Great American Beer Festival. Close to 2000 beers from 400 breweries. And 40,000 people drinking those beers over 4 sessions. The people are ridiculous sometimes.
Just like Notable Drunk #1.
You may remember this dude’s racket from a recent feature-length film, but then again… his impression isn’t really spot-on, but we loved his dedication to the role.
What happens when you get 2,500 excited fans of Flying Dog Brewery in the same place? Gonzofest happens. Flying Dog beer, live music, chili competitions and no rain made for lots of happy attendees. We documented the day’s festivities for you in a short video. If you missed it, you’re not going to want to miss next year’s Gonzofest.
At Flying Dog’s Gonzofest party, we were lucky enough to get footage of a dude who wasn’t so lucky. He went up against a Habañero with only a few glasses of Flying Dog beer in his corner. Needless to say, the dude was overmatched.

Artomatic is an art event in Washington. This year’s Artomatic is taking place through June 15, 2008 and has 800 artists showing in 250,000 square feet of a newly-built office building. 50,000 people are anticipated throughout the 6 weeks the show is up.
Artomatic also sells beer. Which is where Flying Dog Brewery comes in as Artomatic’s official beer sponsor!
The spectacle of Artomatic was unbelievable. We knew the event would be big, but we were completely unprepared for the scope of this thing.
Flying Dog Brewery was one of the supporting breweries at the first-ever Savor festival in Washington D.C. Every beer that was being poured at Savor was also paired with some food, from raspberry-filled artisan chocolates to Empanadas with Mango Salsa and everywhere between.
Savor was held in the Andrew Mellon Auditorium, a very unique location for a beer festival, a block off the Mall right near the Washington Monument. Enthusiastic beer and food connoisseurs descended upon Washington to experience the best of what American Craft Brewers have to offer.
Flying Dog Brewery Lead Dog Eric Warner and Executive Brewer Matt Brophy (our brewing A-Team) sit down to talk about and sample our newest release, Kerberos Tripel. Kerberos is the 4th beer in our Canis Major series, a line of extreme brews.
Flying Dog Brewery’s Executive Brewer Matt Brophy sat down with PR & Event Coordinator Steph Kerchner to talk about Flying Dog Brewery’s new Spring Seasonal, Garde Dog Biere de Garde.
Look for Garde Dog at your favorite watering hole this Spring and Summer!
Flying Dog Brewery was one of the sponsors for a unique fundraiser. The Women’s Lighthouse Project is a Denver-based organization that empowers women with HIV to live healthy, productive and supported lives. This event came a few days before World AIDS Day, and we were happy to be a part of it.
The format of the fundraiser was similar to Iron Chef. 3 local chefs were paired with local celebrities and were given 45 minutes to create a 4 course meal.
Flying Dog founders R. McIntyre and G. Stranahan get together to drink some dogs and talk about what makes a person “Flying Dog”. Hint for Eric Warner: it’s not about wearing girl’s clothes. And what happened in the early days when Ralph Steadman started drawing labels featuring canine genetalia? People quit, that’s what.
More footage from the 2007 GABF. Flying Dog picked up a Bronze medal in the American Style Amber Lager category at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper imparted some wisdom on the crowd, and we even met “The Beer Man”. All in all, a very successful weekend. See you at next year’s GABF!
The Bad Art For Bad People party came to GABF this year, and it was called The Zombie Dance Party. There was some great art for sale, burlesque, and live music. Did we mention that there was plenty of Flying Dog beer? Because there was.
We had a release party at the Blake Street Tavern for our new Wild Dog release, an Open Source Doppelbock. Also sampled were some experimental Canis Major beers, such as a Barrel-Aged Horn Dog Barley Wine and Gonzo Imperial Porter with Brettanomyces (google it). We met up with Stan Hieronymous - a fantastic beer writer - and Justin Davis, who has a weekly podcast about Craft Beer (davisondraft.com).
Sure, there are 400+ breweries pimping 1800 beers at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival, but we at Flying Dog Brewery are taking it up a notch with our custom designed Plinko board. Even with Bob Barker retired from “The Price is Right”, Plinko is near and dear to all humans, transcending class systems.
We roll into the Flying Dog Ranch in Carbondale, CO to hang out with brewery co-founder Richard McIntyre: cum catcher and original road dog. Richard tells us about what it takes to ship cattle semen world-wide, and the jail time he did in the 70’s for tax evasion…seems he didn’t pay tax on his weed sales. Also some choice bits about nude cavorting, and Rippe’s gridiron exploits.
Rise and shine after a night of celebrating the release of Woody Creek White. Wipe the morning dew off your ears and get to work: back to the Woody Creek Tavern to interview George Stranahan, the co-founder of Flying Dog Brewery. This man is a Gentleman and a Scholar; enjoy the vid with the knowledge that this is but one tip of the iceberg.
Introduction to Woody Creek, CO…aka Gonzo Ground Zero. At the Woody Creek White release party we talk to some local characters (known as “Woody Creatures”) about what makes the place so special. Turns out a lot of it’s Flying Dog co-founder George Stranahan. And what’s a party in Woody Creek without a gun? Firearms expert C. Rippe tries to show first time shooter Abby Fox how to load a shotgun, but George has to step in and show him how it’s done.
Driving up to Woody Creek, Colorado for the Woody Creek White release party…and to get the low-down on Flying Dog from founders George Stranahan and Richard McIntyre. Narrated by Chris Rippe, who is a pretty big deal up in the Roaring Fork Valley. Part One of the Season 2 series.
The final tour installment brings us to the distillery next door: Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is a hybrid of scotch and bourbon styles. Stranny’s founder Jess Graber talks about Colorado Whiskey and shows us how to properly sample good booze.
The bottling line. Fobbing, capping, and smoking bottles explained. A peek in the penalty box and an intro to the guys who really run this bitch. Or do they? Vote at squidoo.com/flyingdogales.
Ooooh yeah, there’s some mystery ass in the hot tub, Steamboat Springs, CO. The Flying Dog crew rides the winnebago down from the pass in a blizzard, Danada pees, Rippe gets us lost and walks into the wrong house…an impromptu party in the driveway. beer and cigarrettes were served. Fuck! Whose ass is that in the hot tub?
Into the brewhouse. Head Brewer Matt Brophy and Prez Eric Warner continue on the process of brewing Flying Dog ales. Grain case, mash tun and whirlpool explained. Bubbling Fermentation, a pull off the pigtail, and a close look at the resin-y goodness of hops. Hold on! Can you really smoke that stuff? Let us know…bullshit@flyingdogales.com
Head Brewer Matt Brophy and Prez Eric Warner talk about grain, malts, milling and the first steps in brewing Flying Dog ales. What makes one beer lighter than another? What’s a specialty malt? Why does it taste like Grape Nuts? And besides holding grain, what else are grain bags good for? Find out who shags on grain bags at www.squidoo.com/flyingdogales.
